Who can install gutters in Utah

Gutters fall under DOPL's S230 Masonry, Siding, Stucco, Glass and Rain Gutter Contractor license, which names rain gutters, drains and roof flashings. The S220 carpentry class covers sheet-metal soffits and flashings, and general contractors can install gutters too. Licensed contractors must carry at least $1 million per incident and $2 million in total liability insurance. Check licenses in the state's Licensee Lookup and Verification System.

Jobs under $7,000 can fall under Utah's handyman exemption. Heated gutter cable is different: hardwiring it is electrical work for a licensed electrician.

What Ogden winters do to gutters

Ogden averages about 121 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA), around 21½ inches of precipitation a year, and its code ground snow load is 37 pounds per square foot. Gutters here deal with repeated freeze-thaw, snow sliding off the roof, and ice. What that means for an install:

  • Hangers and spacing matter more than gutter style. Ask what hangers are used and how far apart.
  • Downspouts should carry water away from the foundation, not dump it where it refreezes on a walk.
  • Flashing at the roof edge should direct water into the gutter rather than behind it.

Ice dams start in the attic, not the gutter

An ice dam is a ridge of ice at the roof edge that stops meltwater draining off. University of Minnesota Extension explains it forms when heat escaping from the house melts snow higher on the roof, and the water refreezes at the colder eave. Its fix is to make the ceiling airtight so warm, moist air can't reach the attic, and to insulate. It doesn't mention gutters at all.

Gutter guards and heat cable treat the symptom. If you get big icicles every winter, an air-sealing and insulation job may do more, and it's rebated: Enbridge Gas's ThermWise program pays $0.32 per square foot for attic insulation (add at least R-19 and finish between R-49 and R-60) and up to $850 for air sealing.

On the roof itself, Ogden requires an ice barrier under the shingles at the eaves. See our roofing page.

Permits, historic homes and lead

Ogden's permit page doesn't mention gutters. In a historic district, Landmarks staff review repairs to fascia and soffits, which often come up with new gutters. On a home built before 1978, paid work that disturbs more than 20 square feet of exterior painted surface, such as old painted fascia, must follow lead-safe rules by a certified firm.

What gutters cost in Ogden

We don't publish per-foot prices, because we haven't found a dated local survey we'd stand behind. The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't track gutter installers separately; the closest category, sheet metal workers, has an Ogden-area median wage of $31.38 an hour (May 2025). What moves the price: linear footage and stories, seamless gutters versus sectional, material and gauge, downspouts, guards, fascia repair, and removing the old gutters.

How to choose a gutter company

  1. Check for an S230 or a general contractor license.
  2. Ask about hangers, spacing and pitch for snow loads.
  3. Ask where each downspout will discharge.
  4. If ice dams are the problem, ask about the attic before buying guards or heat cable.
  5. Get the warranty in writing.

Every gutter company listed here has been checked for a real Ogden-area address, local ownership, a Utah license and insurance. See how we vet.

Gutter questions

Who is licensed to install gutters in Utah?

Utah's S230 Masonry, Siding, Stucco, Glass and Rain Gutter Contractor license names rain gutters specifically. General contractors can also install them, and jobs under $7,000 can fall under the handyman exemption.

Why do I get ice dams and icicles?

An ice dam forms when heat escaping from the house melts snow on the upper roof, and the water refreezes at the colder eave. University of Minnesota Extension says the lasting fix is sealing air leaks into the attic and insulating, not the gutters themselves.

Are there rebates that help with ice dams?

Enbridge Gas's ThermWise program pays for attic insulation ($0.32 per square foot when you add at least R-19 and finish between R-49 and R-60) and air sealing (up to $850). There is no gutter-specific rebate.

Do I need a permit for new gutters in Ogden?

Ogden's permit page doesn't mention gutters. In a historic district, fascia and soffit repairs go through Landmarks staff review. If in doubt, call Ogden Building Permits at 801-629-8950.
